The community of Bridgeland and the American Heart Association invite area residents to take the first step toward a healthier lifestyle May 16 during the Bridgeland Start! Walking Day.

Start! Walking is set for 10 a.m. to noon along the Cypress Creek Nature Trail in Bridgeland. Participants are asked to spend 30 minutes walking the trail and learning how easy it is to incorporate regular exercise into a daily routine. Heart-healthy refreshments will be provided and various vendors will be on hand to discuss healthy lifestyles. Also, the first 100 people will receive multi-function pedometers able to count steps, calculate the numbers of calories burned and determine how many miles have been walked. The event is a prelude to the annual Heart Walk, hosted by the American Heart Association to raise funds and awareness about heart disease and the positive benefits of exercise. The Heart Walk is slated for Nov. 7 at the Cy-Fair campus of Lone Star College.

Hundreds of people recently helped usher in the new spring season at Bridgeland, attending a festive “Bring in the Spring” event that was packed full of nature-themed activities to celebrate the season.

Robust winds made kite flying a hit, with dozens of colorful kites given away. Also popular was a flower planting station, a hula hoop contest, sack races and a performance by the Houston Canine Frisbee Disc Club. Event-goers also enjoyed the release of more than 100 American Painted Lady butterflies.

Crowds gathered in the Bridgeland community recently to help break ground on the 10th home to be built for a wounded war veteran through the HelpingaHero.org Home Program.

Bridgeland has donated a cul-de-sac homesite overlooking a lake for the project and Perry Homes is building the home. This is the seventh home Perry has constructed at a substantial discount for the HelpingaHero.org Home Program. The home is slated for completion this summer.
