After devoting considerable time, money and land to the effort, Bridgeland is the first developer to introduce New Urbanism to the greater Houston area, with the launch of Lakeland Heights, a walkable Traditional Neighborhood Development (TND) where the tenets of New Urbanism and Main Street-style housing are seamlessly integrated with shops, parks, restaurants and services, all following guidelines meticulously detailed in a pattern book by architectural powerhouse Looney Ricks Kiss. Crucial to the overall design standards and the land plan of Lakeland Heights, the pattern book provides a comprehensive picture of how the TND will look and function.

After receiving the keys to a new home in Bridgeland in late August, wounded war veteran Capt. Daniel Moran, USMC (Ret.), and his family were treated to another surprise in November, courtesy of the Boy Scouts of America.
The Boy Scouts are teaming up with HelpingaHero.org to partially landscape several homes awarded through the HelpingaHero.org Home Program. Local Scouts from the Sam Houston Area Council transformed Moran’s back patio with a variety of plants and shrubs on Nov. 10, the 234th anniversary of the founding of the U.S. Marine Corps and the day before Veteran’s Day.

Bridgeland is welcoming D.R. Horton — the nation’s largest New model opens in Bridgeland by D.R. Hortonhomebuilder — to the community, where the builder is offering homes from the $170,000s, a new price point.
D.R. Horton, publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol DHI, recently opened a model in Bridgeland and is starting work on 13 inventory homes. Eleven designs ranging from 1,549 to 2,650 square feet will be offered in the development’s Briar Cove neighborhood. Many of the designs are new for D.R. Horton, said Carl Magill, a sales representative for the builder.
“These plans offer great design and value,” Magill said. “The one-story plans have 10-foot ceilings and all plans include gas fireplaces with remote control, tall vanities in the master baths, covered patios and tile in all wet areas. Plus, every home is built to Energy Star standards.”

Custom home buyers in the award-winning Bridgeland community will enjoy elegant homes set in gracious surroundings on homesites that are now nearly one-half acre.
The newly enlarged homesites are nestled amid three nature reserves and all 20 properties feature water views. This distinctive neighborhood, The Reserve at First Bend, is gated, requiring key card entry for cars and for access to the bordering pedestrian trails. Despite its exclusivity, the neighborhood is well-located within Bridgeland, an easy walk along pedestrian paths to playgrounds, gardens and Oak Meadow Park, which is home to Bridgeland’s disc golf course and frequent community events.

Bridgeland is taking its innovative model home park concept to the next level, with a new park in the planning stages.
The second park, which should open next spring, will be in The Cove, a distinctive collection of neighborhoods surrounded by water and boasting abundant common areas. Current plans call for 12 model homes, which will be segmented by price in three adjacent locations.
“The new model home park will actually be three in one, making it even easier for prospective home buyers,” said Peter Houghton, the Bridgeland community’s vice president of master-planned communities.

Wounded war veteran Capt. Daniel Moran, USMC (Ret.), and his family received keys to their new Bridgeland home Monday, Aug. 31, sharing the momentous event with a crowd of well-wishers that included U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, U.S. Congressman Todd Tiahrt (R-KS) and Astros legend Craig Biggio, all on hand to show their support of Moran and HelpingaHero.org.
Builder Perry Homes constructed the Morans’ new home on a homesite donated by Bridgeland, an 11,400-acre development of General Growth Properties in Cypress that was named Master Planned Community of the Year in 2008 by the National Association of Home Builders. This is the seventh of eight homes Perry has built at a substantial discount for the HelpingaHero.org Home Program. Perry will dedicate its eighth HelpingaHero.org home Sept. 14. Houston Rotary District 5890 also has been actively involved in raising money for the project, which was funded by The Strake Foundation, Rex and Marilyn King and the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.

In the Bridgeland community, 3,000 acres of open space means residents can really enjoy the great outdoors, both the ambiance it provides and the activities made possible through an abundance of lakes, trails, parks and more.
And that extent of open space — more than 25 percent of the community’s total 11,400 acres — puts it as No. 1 on Bridgeland’s inventory of thoughtful features of the community — the “Bridgeland Differences” — a list that highlights such amenities as an education plan serving preschoolers to adults, fiber optic technology and underground power lines.
